  • 2016  1 December  Day 3
( Sandiaoling waterfalls,   Shifen waterfall,    Shifen Old Street,   Jingtong  &  Pingxi )

Stations on the Pingxi rail line :

        Ruifang - Houtong - Sandiaoling - Dahua - Shifen - Wanggu - Lingjiao - Pingxi - Jingtong

It was drizzling the whole day....right from early morning.

If you are planning to do some trekking to the waterfalls during this period, get your shoes protected with rain cover.....

    1.   Sandiaoling waterfalls

Took the Pingxi line from Ruifang station.  We alighted at Sandiaoling station which looked deserted and old.  Had planned to conquer two waterfalls here , Hegu and Motian waterfalls.  Due to the rain, we only managed to conquer one.. Hegu waterfall.  It took us slightly more than 1 hour to reach the observation deck of the Hegu waterfall.    Only the 1st portion of the trail has concrete steps , the rest is mud path.  You can imagine in the end how our shoes look like..... faint..

Estimate slightly more than 2 1/2 hr if you were to conquer both.

Be prepared , it's gonna be quite a long walk from the station to the old abandoned elementary school.  (maybe 20mins)

follow the tracks away from the Taipei direction towards a tunnel.

Take the pedestrian underpass under the railway ( shown below), and then follow the path beside the Pingxi Line railway.

    pass by this...

next, further down you will see the elementary school

and mud trails all the way....

picture below taken from observation deck FINALLY.......!!

Motian waterfall is another 25-30mins away..

Note :  Trains on the Pingxi line comes hourly.

    2.   Shifen Waterfall

Next station, Shifen , well known for the Shifen Waterfall, nicknamed as the Little Niagara !!

The train station located down the river from the waterfall area, originally built for transporting coal, was built right alongside the Shifen Old Streets (十分老街).

                                         Group of Students....

This barbecued chicken stuffed with glutinous rice is simply delicious!!  The first store you will see after you alight from Shifen station.

The railway track here is soooo crowded with people releasing 'Sky lanterns'.   We did ours at Pingxi station.

Again,  from Shifen train station to Shifen Waterfall is around maybe half an hour or more.  Some nice scenaries along the way

Here's the magnificent Shifen waterfall !!

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Had previously planned two more stations with nearby waterfalls.. but my younger daughter was whining ... no more waterfalls trekking for the day....and my hubby had issued the red light...:( xianz.....

By the way, the other 2 waterfalls are Wanggu and Lingjiao waterfalls at both respective train stations.

    3.   Jingtong  (Last stop on Pingxi Line)

    4.  Pingxi

And finally, we released our 'Sky lantern' at Pingxi.  Pingxi is rather quiet and most stores on the inside have already closed.  We had to eat our dinner at a convenience store , 7-eleven, I think.
